NDDC Sets Agenda to Turn Niger Delta into Nigeria’s Food Production Hub

The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has reaffirmed its commitment to transforming the Niger Delta region into Nigeria’s primary food production hub through sustainable agricultural investment and regional collaboration.

The assurance came during a two-day strategic stakeholders’ retreat titled “Niger Delta Critical Stakeholders’ Agenda Setting on Unlocking Agricultural Potential of the Niger Delta Region,” held in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

Speaking at the retreat, the Executive Director of NDDC, Dr. Samuel Ogbuku, said agriculture presents the most reliable path to economic growth, peace, and long-term food security in the region. He noted that the region’s economic history before crude oil exploration was rooted in farming, aquaculture, and other agro-based activities.

> “This retreat is aimed at rubbing minds together to ensure food security in the Niger Delta so that we can build an agricultural hub capable of supplying food across the country,” Ogbuku stated.
He added that the Niger Delta possesses vast natural resources, fertile land, and a strategic water environment that gives it a comparative advantage—especially in aquaculture and agro-processing.

Ogbuku emphasized that the Commission’s new approach aligns with the Renewed Hope Agenda, urging stakeholders to prioritize agriculture as a central pillar for development.

> “We must leave a lasting legacy for generations,” he added.
Key stakeholders at the retreat included government representatives, agricultural experts, community leaders, and private sector investors, all of whom pledged support for a coordinated approach to boost food production, job creation, and rural community engagement.

The NDDC says it will roll out practical agricultural initiatives in the coming months to drive the plan forward.
