Bindir: Nigeria’s Food Crisis Will Persist Without Multi-Sector Reforms
Agricultural engineer and former Adamawa State Secretary to the Government, Umar Bindir, has warned that Nigeria’s food security challenges will continue unless reforms extend beyond the agriculture sector to include water management, technology deployment, and stronger political leadership.
Speaking on Sunday, Bindir acknowledged ongoing efforts by the current administration but stressed that food security should not be treated as the sole responsibility of the Ministry of Agriculture.
“The administration is doing its best. But the issue is food security is not a Ministry of Agriculture thing. Food security is supposed to be the coalition, the partnership, the synergy of many sectors working together,” he said.
Bindir identified water management as the most neglected yet critical factor affecting agricultural productivity and rural stability. According to him, effective management of water resources is fundamental to improving output across crops, livestock, and fisheries.
“Water management remains the most neglected but critical component of agricultural productivity and rural stability. Managing water resources in this country needs very, very serious reform,” he added.
Drawing from his experience in Adamawa State, Bindir also noted that Nigeria’s security challenges have evolved beyond conventional armed conflict. He described the emerging threat as “communal or community insecurity,” indicating a shift from what security experts traditionally classify as kinetic threats.
The former government official called for coordinated, cross-sector reforms, warning that without integrated action, Nigeria’s food security ambitions may remain difficult to achieve.
