Kampala, Uganda — October 22, 2025

At least 63 people have been confirmed dead following a devastating multi-vehicle accident on Uganda’s Kampala-Gulu Highway, police authorities said early Wednesday.

The fatal crash occurred around 12:15 a.m. local time (21:15 GMT) when two long-distance passenger buses traveling in opposite directions collided while attempting to overtake a lorry and a car.

According to the Uganda Police Force, one of the buses tried to swerve to avoid an oncoming vehicle but instead triggered a head-on and side collision, causing several vehicles to overturn in a deadly chain reaction.

Emergency responders rushed to the scene and transported survivors to hospitals in Kiryandongo, a town in western Uganda. Officials said the number of injured persons has not yet been confirmed as rescue operations continue.

Police spokesperson Fred Enanga stated that an investigation is ongoing to determine the precise cause of the crash, but dangerous overtaking is believed to be a major contributing factor.

Authorities have urged motorists to avoid reckless driving, emphasizing that such behavior remains one of the leading causes of fatal road accidents in Uganda.

The Kampala-Gulu Highway serves as a key transport corridor connecting Uganda’s capital, Kampala, to Gulu in the north, and is heavily trafficked by both commercial and passenger vehicles.
