6.3-Magnitude Earthquake Kills At Least 20 in Northern Afghanistan, Over 320 Injured
At least 20 people have been confirmed dead and more than 320 others injured after a powerful 6.3-magnitude earthquake struck northern Afghanistan early Monday morning, authorities have said.
The quake, which hit near Mazar-e-Sharif in Balkh Province around 1:00 a.m. local time (20:30 GMT), caused widespread panic among residents. The US Geological Survey (USGS) reported that the earthquake occurred at a depth of 28 kilometers (17 miles) and issued an orange alert, signaling the likelihood of significant damage and casualties.
Sharafat Zaman Amar, spokesperson for the Taliban-led Ministry of Health, warned that the death toll could rise as rescue teams reach more affected areas. âOur emergency teams are still working,â he said. âMany people are trapped under collapsed structures.â
Local authorities stated that hundreds of homes and buildings sustained damage, with some completely destroyed. Rescue and medical workers continue to search through rubble, while hospitals are reportedly overwhelmed with injured residents.
Haji Zaid, a Taliban provincial spokesperson, noted that many injuries occurred as people jumped from buildings in fear. âMany people are injured in the Sholgara district,â he wrote on X (formerly Twitter). He added that while many injuries were minor, they are widespread and require urgent medical attention.
Videos shared by officials and residents online show collapsed walls, broken infrastructure, and debris surrounding the historic Blue Mosque, one of Mazar-e-Sharifâs most important cultural and religious landmarks. The mosque, known for its striking blue-tiled façade, is a major pilgrimage site believed to house the tomb of the first Shia Imam.
Authorities are calling for urgent humanitarian assistance, including tents, medical supplies, and food support, especially as winter approaches.
