Russian Military Losses in Ukraine Surge to Highest Level Since 2022 Invasion
Russian military losses in Ukraine are rising at their fastest pace since the full-scale invasion began in 2022, according to new analysis, even as the United States steps up diplomatic efforts aimed at brokering a peace deal.
Data compiled from open-source investigations and media monitoring indicate a sharp acceleration in Russian casualties over the past 10 months. Russian media outlets reportedly published about 40 per cent more obituaries in 2025 compared with the same period last year, pointing to a significant increase in battlefield deaths.
So far, nearly 160,000 named Russian soldiers killed in Ukraine have been confirmed through open-source reporting, memorial records, and social media posts. The figures were compiled by independent Russian outlet Mediazona in collaboration with volunteer researchers.
However, military analysts caution that the confirmed number represents only a portion of the actual toll. Experts estimate that the verified deaths account for between 45 and 65 per cent of total Russian fatalities, suggesting the real number of soldiers killed could range from 243,000 to as high as 352,000.
While obituary-based counts remain provisional, analysts consider them a reliable indicator of shifts in combat intensity and manpower losses, particularly when tracked over time. The sharp rise underscores the continuing human cost of the war, now well into its fourth year, despite renewed international calls for negotiations and de-escalation.
The findings come amid ongoing fighting across multiple fronts in eastern and southern Ukraine, with neither side showing signs of a decisive breakthrough, even as diplomatic efforts continue behind the scenes.
