At Least 10 Killed as Torrential Rains Trigger Deadly Flooding in Northeastern South Africa
Northeastern South Africa — At least 10 people have died after torrential rains caused severe flooding in northeastern South Africa on Thursday, forcing the temporary closure of the Kruger National Park, one of the country’s most iconic tourist destinations.
Officials reported that the flooding struck overnight, with the worst impact in Limpopo province, where nine people lost their lives in a village near the Kruger Park. A provincial government spokesperson told AFP that nearly 200 residents had been rescued as emergency services worked to reach communities cut off by rising waters.
Images released by the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) showed military helicopters airlifting stranded residents from treetops after flash floods swept through homes and farmlands.
In neighbouring Mpumalanga province, rescue teams recovered the body of a woman who drowned while attempting to cross a swollen river. Provincial authorities confirmed that at least 19 people have died in Mpumalanga since heavy rains began in November.
Authorities have urged residents to stay vigilant as rivers continue to swell and heavy rains are expected to persist in the coming days. Emergency services remain on high alert, prioritising evacuations and relief efforts for the affected communities.
