CAN Celebrates Imam Abubakar Abdullahi for Heroic Protection of Christians in Plateau
Abuja — The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has honoured Imam Abubakar Abdullahi, describing him as “an extraordinary religious leader” whose courage and compassion remain a powerful symbol of unity and shared humanity.
CAN recalled that during the 2018 attack on Christians in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State by suspected Fulani militants, Imam Abdullahi risked his own life to shelter and protect dozens of fleeing Christians inside his mosque and residence.
According to the association, the Imam’s decision to stand against violence and defend innocent lives at great personal danger transcended religious and ethnic divides, reinforcing the principle that the sanctity of human life must come above all differences.
In a statement, CAN President, Rev. Daniel Okoh, said Imam Abdullahi’s actions continue to inspire Nigerians across faith lines.
“At a time when fear and hatred sought to divide communities, Imam Abdullahi became a bridge-builder and a living example of what true religion stands for — love, sacrifice, and the protection of human dignity,” Okoh stated.
CAN praised the cleric for demonstrating that peaceful coexistence between Christians and Muslims is not only possible but essential for national unity and stability.
The association urged religious leaders across the country to emulate the Imam’s example by promoting tolerance, defending vulnerable communities, and rejecting all forms of violence carried out in the name of faith.
Imam Abdullahi gained national and international recognition following the 2018 incident, with many hailing him as a hero of interfaith harmony in Nigeria.
