53 Migrants Feared Dead As Boat Capsizes In Libya, Leaves Two Nigerian Survivors
A tragic boat accident off the coast of Libya has left at least 53 migrants feared dead, with only a handful of survivors rescued, including two Nigerians, according to emerging reports from rescue sources.
The vessel, believed to have been carrying dozens of migrants attempting to cross the Mediterranean Sea toward Europe, reportedly capsized shortly after departure. The cause of the incident has been linked to overcrowding and rough sea conditions, a recurring danger in the regionâs migrant routes.
Rescue teams said the two Nigerian survivors were found clinging to debris hours after the boat overturned. They are currently receiving medical attention and psychological support. Authorities have not yet released their identities.
Libya remains one of the main departure points for migrants from Africa and parts of the Middle East seeking better opportunities in Europe. However, the journey across the Mediterranean is considered one of the worldâs deadliest migration routes, with thousands losing their lives each year due to unsafe boats and human smuggling networks.
Human rights organizations have once again called for stronger international action against trafficking networks and improved protection for vulnerable migrants risking the dangerous crossing.
Investigations into the incident are ongoing as search efforts continue in hopes of finding more survivors, though fears remain high that the death toll could rise.
