The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has called on churches nationwide to heighten security awareness and take proactive measures to safeguard their congregations following the killing of over 40 people in Plateau State.
The tragic incident occurred in Angwan Rukuba, located in Jos North, on Palm Sundayâan important day in the Christian calendar marking the beginning of Holy Week. The attack has sparked outrage across the country, with religious leaders and stakeholders condemning the violence.
In a statement issued shortly after the incident, CAN President, Daniel Okoh, described the killings as âtragic and unacceptable,â noting that the victims included innocent men, women, and children.
Okoh said the attack reflects a troubling and persistent pattern of violence affecting communities in parts of Nigeria, particularly in Plateau State. He expressed deep concern that a day meant for peace, reflection, and spiritual renewal had been marred by bloodshed.
âPalm Sunday, which should symbolize hope and unity, has instead become a day of sorrow,â he said.
The CAN President urged Christian faithful across the country to remain prayerful during the ongoing Holy Week while also prioritizing their safety during church activities, including Good Friday services and Easter vigils.
He emphasized the need for churches to strengthen local security arrangements, collaborate with community leaders, and remain alert to potential threats.
The latest attack adds to growing security concerns in Plateau State, a region that has witnessed recurring violence in recent years. Calls have intensified for authorities to take decisive action to protect lives and restore lasting peace.
