NBS Announces 4.23% Economic Growth, Labour Disagrees

The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has announced that Nigeria’s economy grew by 4.23% in the last quarter, citing increased output in agriculture, telecommunications, and the services sector. According to the agency, the positive performance reflects gradual economic recovery despite inflation and global market uncertainties.

However, organised labour has rejected the report, arguing that the figures do not reflect the realities faced by ordinary Nigerians. Labour unions contend that rising food prices, unemployment, and declining purchasing power contradict claims of significant growth. They insist that the government must prioritise policies that directly address poverty and wage stagnation rather than celebrating statistical improvements.

Analysts say the contrasting views highlight Nigeria’s economic paradox—statistical growth amid worsening living conditions for millions of citizens. Labour leaders have called for urgent dialogue with the government to harmonise economic policies with the people’s welfare.
