EU Set to Introduce Fingerprint, Facial Scans at Borders
The European Union is finalising plans to implement a new border control system requiring fingerprint and facial scans for all non-EU travellers entering or exiting the bloc. The Entry/Exit System (EES), expected to launch in 2025, aims to strengthen security, monitor overstays, and streamline immigration checks across Schengen states.
Under the new system, biometric data such as fingerprints and facial images will replace traditional passport stamps, allowing authorities to track the duration of stays more accurately. The EES will apply to visitors from countries outside the Schengen Area, including the UK, USA, and many African nations.
EU officials say the move will modernise border management, reduce illegal migration, and speed up crossings. However, critics warn it could lead to privacy concerns, technical delays, and increased waiting times during the rollout phase.
