Opposition Slams Government as States’ IGR Soars by 50% Amid Economic Hardship

News:
The opposition parties have criticized the federal government following new fiscal data showing a 50% surge in Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) across Nigerian states. According to the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS), total IGR rose from ₦2.43 trillion in 2022 to ₦3.63 trillion in 2023, with Lagos, Rivers, and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) leading the chart. While the ruling party hailed the increase as proof of effective fiscal policies, opposition leaders argued that the rise came at the expense of citizens, who face higher taxes and fees amid worsening inflation and unemployment. Economists, however, noted that improved revenue collection could boost state autonomy if properly managed.
