Nigeria TV Info — World Bank President Projects Nigeria’s Population to Rise by 130 Million by 2050
Washington D.C., U.S.A. — The President of the World Bank Group, Ajay Banga, has projected that Nigeria’s population will surge by about 130 million by the year 2050, underscoring the country’s growing demographic significance on the global stage.
Banga made the projection during the 2025 Annual Meetings of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank, held in Washington D.C.
According to data from the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA), Nigeria’s current population is estimated at 237.5 million. The anticipated increase, he said, would firmly position Nigeria among the world’s most populous nations.
“Nigeria will swell by about 130 million, firmly establishing itself as one of the most populous nations in the world,” Banga stated.
The World Bank chief also drew attention to wider demographic trends across Africa. He noted that Zambia is expected to add about 700,000 people annually, while Mozambique’s population is projected to double by 2050.
We are living through one of the great demographic shifts in human history,” he remarked.
Banga further emphasized that by 2050, over 85 percent of the global population will live in countries currently classified as developing economies. He also highlighted a looming employment challenge, noting that in the next 10 to 15 years, around 1.2 billion young people will enter the global workforce — competing for only about 400 million available jobs.
The World Bank chief urged global leaders to invest in education, skills, and innovation to harness the benefits of this demographic transition and mitigate potential socio-economic risks.
