AEDC Sacks 800 Workers Amid Deepening Power Crisis.

The Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) has laid off 800 employees across various departments as part of a major restructuring effort to reduce operational costs. The move comes amid Nigeria’s worsening power crisis, with consumers facing prolonged blackouts and poor service delivery. Management sources say the decision was taken to enhance efficiency and reposition the firm for better performance, though labour unions have condemned the action, warning of nationwide protests. The National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE) described the layoffs as “inhumane” and accused AEDC of ignoring due process. Meanwhile, energy experts fear the mass sack could further cripple electricity distribution in the FCT and neighbouring states.
