World Bank: Only 44% of Nigeria’s Social Benefits Reach the Poor
The World Bank has revealed that only 44 percent of Nigeria’s social protection benefits reach the nation’s poorest citizens, raising concerns over inefficiency and inequity in the distribution of government welfare programs.
In its latest report on Nigeria’s social safety nets, the Bank highlighted that despite significant funding allocated to various poverty alleviation schemes, the bulk of the benefits often go to non-poor households due to weak targeting systems, corruption, and limited data accuracy.
The report emphasized the urgent need for Nigeria to strengthen its National Social Registry, expand digital payment systems, and ensure transparency in the distribution process to improve impact.
According to the Bank, redirecting funds to reach genuinely poor and vulnerable Nigerians would not only enhance social equity but also reduce poverty and promote inclusive economic growth.
The institution also urged the Nigerian government to harmonize fragmented welfare programs across ministries and adopt technology-driven solutions to close existing gaps.
