Tinubu Presents 2026 Budget, Proposes N5.41tn Allocation for Security

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Thursday presented the 2026 Appropriation Bill to a joint session of the National Assembly, proposing a massive ₩5.41 trillion allocation to the security sector as part of efforts to tackle insecurity and strengthen national stability.

In his budget address, Tinubu said the proposed security spending reflects the federal government’s commitment to defeating terrorism, banditry, kidnapping and other criminal activities threatening lives, property and economic growth across the country. He noted that improved security remains a critical foundation for investment, food security and overall development.

According to the president, the security vote will cover the Armed Forces, Nigeria Police Force, intelligence agencies and other security institutions, with emphasis on personnel welfare, modern equipment, intelligence gathering and inter-agency collaboration. He stressed that adequate funding would enhance operational capacity and morale of security operatives.

Tinubu explained that the 2026 budget is anchored on his administration’s Renewed Hope Agenda, prioritising security, economic stability, infrastructure development, social welfare and human capital growth. He urged lawmakers to give the budget accelerated consideration in the national interest.

The president also called for sustained cooperation between the executive and legislative arms to ensure effective implementation of the budget, adding that accountability and transparency would remain central to public spending.

The proposed 2026 budget is expected to undergo detailed scrutiny by the National Assembly in the coming weeks before passage.
