Four Days to Tax Reform: Manufacturers Cheer Prospects as Labour, SMEs Warn of Fallout
As Nigeria counts down to the implementation of the long-awaited tax reform package, manufacturers are voicing optimism about a clearer tax regime, streamlined compliance, and incentives that could spur investment and job creation.
Industry leaders say simplified filing, reduced multiplicity of levies, and targeted credits for local production may ease pressures that have eroded margins over the past two years. Several firms are already preparing expansion plans contingent on stable policy and predictable enforcement.
However, organised labour and small- and medium-scale enterprises (SMEs) are raising alarms. They argue that some proposals â including broader VAT coverage, stricter withholding rules, and tighter compliance penalties â could transfer costs to workers, raise consumer prices, and push fragile businesses into distress.
Labour unions have threatened protests if government fails to provide safeguards such as exemptions on essential goods, living-wage adjustments, and widened social protection. SME associations are also demanding phased implementation and low-cost support to digitise tax records.
The Ministry of Finance insists the reform will close loopholes, improve fairness, and expand revenue for infrastructure and social services, while promising ongoing consultations and impact reviews. With just four days to go, negotiations are intensifying â and the country is bracing for a delicate balance between growth, equity, and fiscal stability.
