FIRS Transforms Into Nigeria Revenue Service As New Tax Laws Take Effect
The Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS) has officially transitioned into the Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS), marking a major institutional shift in Nigeria’s revenue administration system with the unveiling of a new brand identity.
The rebranding signals the beginning of a new era in tax administration as Nigeria’s newly enacted tax laws formally came into force on Thursday. The Nigeria Revenue Service commenced operations following the signing of its enabling legislation, the Nigeria Revenue Service Establishment Act 2025, by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in June 2025.
Speaking at the official unveiling of the NRS logo on Wednesday in Abuja, the Executive Chairman of the Service, Zacch Adedeji, described the new identity as a significant milestone in the evolution of Nigeria’s revenue framework. He explained that the logo and accompanying brand elements reflect the Service’s renewed mandate, institutional reforms, and commitment to efficiency, transparency, and national development.
According to Adedeji, the transformation from FIRS to NRS is designed to strengthen revenue mobilisation, align Nigeria’s tax administration with global best practices, and support the effective implementation of the new tax reform agenda.
Meanwhile, the rollout of the new tax regime received legal backing as a High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) dismissed an application seeking to halt the implementation of the reforms scheduled to commence on January 1, 2026. The court’s decision clears the way for the Tinubu-led federal government to proceed with the reforms as planned.
In a related development, the Director General of the Budget Office of the Federation (BoF), Tanimu Yakubu, reaffirmed the integrity of the newly enacted Tax Reform Acts. He cautioned against what he described as governance by speculation and unverified claims, following allegations that the laws were altered after passage.
Yakubu stressed that the tax reforms followed due legislative process and are critical to strengthening Nigeria’s fiscal sustainability, improving revenue generation, and reducing overdependence on borrowing.
The transformation of FIRS into the Nigeria Revenue Service, alongside the implementation of the new tax laws, represents one of the most significant overhauls of Nigeria’s fiscal architecture in recent years.
