Big Money, Small Impact: Governors Face Fire Over N9tn FAAC Windfall

State governors across Nigeria are under growing public scrutiny following reports that about ₩9 trillion was shared among states through the Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) within the last fiscal year. Despite the unprecedented inflow, labour unions, civil society groups and economic analysts argue that living conditions for citizens have not improved significantly.

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) accused several state governments of failing to translate increased allocations into better wages, healthcare, education and basic infrastructure. According to the union, many workers still battle delayed salaries while communities continue to suffer from poor roads and limited access to social services.

Civil society organisations also raised concerns over transparency, urging governors to publish detailed breakdowns of FAAC spending. They warned that weak accountability systems could encourage mismanagement and misuse of public funds.

Economic experts noted that although allocations have risen sharply, high inflation and naira depreciation have reduced the real value of the funds. They, however, insisted that prudent spending, project monitoring and stronger internally generated revenue strategies could have helped cushion economic hardships.

As pressure mounts, stakeholders are calling for reforms to strengthen fiscal discipline at the state level and ensure that future FAAC disbursements deliver visible development outcomes for Nigerians.
