N1.8tn Debt: Reps Signal Imminent Contractor Payments

The House of Representatives has indicated that long-awaited payments to contractors owed a combined N1.8 trillion may soon begin, following renewed budget reviews and debt reconciliation efforts with relevant federal agencies.

According to lawmakers, the delay in settling verified contractual obligations has slowed infrastructure delivery across sectors such as roads, housing, and power projects nationwide. Many contractors had reportedly suspended work due to unpaid certifications running into several years.

The House Committee on Public Accounts and other fiscal oversight bodies are now engaging the Ministry of Finance and the Office of the Accountant-General to fast-track verification of genuine claims and eliminate inflated or duplicate invoices.

Lawmakers stressed that the move is part of broader efforts to ease liquidity pressure in the construction sector, restore confidence in government contracts, and stimulate economic activity through capital project execution.

They also warned that only properly verified and budget-backed debts will be cleared, as government seeks to balance contractor obligations with fiscal discipline and ongoing economic reforms.
