Ukraine has announced that its Security Service (SBU) conducted a long-range drone strike targeting a major oil refinery near the Russian city of Perm. The operation represents one of the deepest strikes into Russian territory since the escalation of attacks on energy infrastructure.
According to Ukrainian officials, the refineryâowned by Lukoilâis located more than 1,500 kilometers from Ukraineâs border. The facility is considered one of Russiaâs largest oil processing plants, with an estimated annual capacity of nearly 13 million metric tons.
Significant Damage Reported to Processing Unit
The SBU stated that the drone strike successfully hit a critical primary processing unit within the refinery. Authorities claim the damage has rendered the unit non-operational, potentially disrupting fuel production and supply chains in the region.
In addition to the refinery strike, Ukraine reported a follow-up attack on a nearby oil pumping station that feeds crude oil into the facility. The second strike reportedly triggered fresh fires, compounding the damage and raising concerns over broader operational shutdowns.
Escalating Focus on Energy Infrastructure
This latest attack appears to be part of a sustained Ukrainian strategy targeting Russiaâs energy sector, aiming to weaken logistics and economic capabilities tied to oil production and export.
While Russian authorities have yet to release full details on the extent of the damage, previous strikes on similar infrastructure have led to temporary shutdowns and costly repairs.
Regional and Global Implications
The continued targeting of oil facilities could have ripple effects beyond the immediate conflict zone, particularly in global energy markets already sensitive to supply disruptions. Analysts warn that repeated strikes on large-scale refineries may tighten output and influence oil prices.
