President Bola Tinubu has been urged to take urgent remedial measures to address growing policy imbalances in the Niger Delta region amid fears of renewed unrest linked to oil and gas pipeline surveillance contracts.
The warning was issued by the Niger Delta Stakeholders Forum and Niger Delta Ethnic Nationalities in a communiqué released after a strategic meeting held in Port Harcourt on Wednesday evening.
According to the stakeholders, early signs of tension that once fueled conflicts in the Niger Delta are beginning to re-emerge, raising concerns about the possibility of fresh instability if immediate action is not taken.
The groups expressed concern over what they described as imbalances in government policies, particularly regarding the award and management of oil and gas pipeline surveillance contracts in the region.
In the communiqué, the stakeholders urged President Tinubu to adopt proactive and inclusive measures to address grievances and ensure fairness among communities and ethnic groups in the Niger Delta.
They stressed that failure to tackle the issues promptly could reignite tensions capable of disrupting peace, security, and oil production activities in the oil-rich region.
The stakeholders also called on the federal government to prioritize dialogue, equity, and stakeholder engagement to prevent avoidable conflicts.
The Niger Delta has long faced challenges linked to environmental degradation, resource control disputes, and economic exclusion despite being Nigeria’s major oil-producing hub.
Observers say renewed instability in the region could have significant consequences for national revenue and energy production, making early intervention critical.
