Inside Crisis Facing Medics: Nigerian Doctors Earn N2m, UK Counterparts N50m

Nigeria’s health sector is facing a deepening crisis as wage disparity continues to fuel the mass migration of medical professionals, popularly known as Japa. Reports reveal that while doctors in Nigeria earn an average of N2 million annually, their counterparts in the United Kingdom take home as much as N50 million per year.

This stark income gap, coupled with poor working conditions, inadequate facilities, and security concerns, has left the country grappling with an exodus of doctors and other health workers. The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) recently disclosed that no fewer than 10,000 doctors have migrated in the last five years, leaving hospitals understaffed and patients at risk.

Stakeholders warn that if urgent reforms are not implemented to improve remuneration, welfare, and infrastructure, the nation’s healthcare system may collapse under the strain of brain drain. Meanwhile, many young medics see relocation as the only pathway to professional fulfillment and financial stability.
