Funding Crisis Derailing Fight Against Violence on Women – UN
The United Nations has expressed deep concern over a worsening funding shortfall threatening global efforts to combat violence against women and girls. According to the UN Women’s latest report, several key programmes addressing gender-based violence are on the brink of collapse due to dwindling financial support from donor countries and development partners.
The report, released ahead of the International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, highlights that nearly 70 per cent of prevention and protection initiatives in low-income nations face closure by mid-2026 if urgent funding is not secured.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres urged governments and the private sector to prioritise women’s safety, warning that “underfunding gender-based violence prevention undermines human rights and sustainable development.” He stressed that violence against women remains one of the most pervasive human rights violations, affecting one in three women globally.
The UN appealed for a coordinated global response to ensure shelters, legal aid, and psychosocial support for survivors remain accessible. It also called for increased investment in education and awareness to challenge harmful gender norms and promote equality.
