UNODC Calls for Tougher Penalties Against Cyber-Violence and Revenge Porn in Nigeria

The United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) has called for stricter penalties and stronger legal frameworks to combat cyber-violence, particularly the growing crime of revenge pornography in Nigeria.

Speaking on Tuesday in Abuja at the opening of a three-day workshop on Cybercrime and Violence Against Women Through Information and Communication Technologies (ICT), the UNODC Nigeria Country Representative, Cheikh Touré, urged stakeholders in the security and justice sectors to prioritize the fight against online sexual exploitation.

The workshop, themed “Cyber-Interpersonal Violence: The Challenge of Responding to Revenge Porn,” brought together representatives of law enforcement, civil society, and digital rights advocates.

TourĂ© noted that revenge pornography—defined as the non-consensual sharing of intimate images—has become one of the most damaging forms of online abuse, causing lasting emotional and psychological trauma to victims.
