Resident Doctors Set to Resume Nationwide Strike on January 12 Over Unmet Agreements

The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has formally announced the resumption of its nationwide strike action beginning 12:00 a.m. on Monday, January 12, 2026, following the Federal Government’s failure to fully implement key welfare and agreement commitments.

In a statement issued after an Extraordinary National Executive Council (NEC) meeting on January 2, NARD President Dr. Mohammed Suleiman said the fresh industrial action — tagged “TICS 2.0: No Implementation, No Going Back” — will be total, indefinite, and comprehensive.

The association stressed that the new strike will only be suspended when the government meets all outstanding demands, particularly those related to unpaid arrears, delayed promotions, staffing shortages, and unfulfilled parts of the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) previously signed with health authorities.

NARD has instructed its leaders in all 91 accredited centres nationwide to hold press briefings over the next week, reinforcing the union’s resolve. The strike will be accompanied by centre-based protests from January 12–16, followed by regional and national demonstrations if government inaction persists.

The renewed standoff comes after a temporary suspension of a prior indefinite strike in late 2025 — a move that gave the government a four-week window to implement negotiated measures, many of which remain incomplete.

Key Issues:

  • Failure to fully implement previously agreed MoU provisions
  • Outstanding salary and allowance arrears
  • Delays in promotion and staffing reforms
  • Ongoing dissatisfaction with health sector working conditions

Healthcare observers warn that another prolonged strike could further strain Nigeria’s already fragile public health services, with prolonged disruptions likely in tertiary hospitals nationwide.
