Health Workers’ Strike Grounds Hospitals Nationwide
Hospitals across Nigeria have been largely paralyzed as health workers initiated an indefinite strike over unpaid salaries, delayed promotions, and poor working conditions. The action, led by the National Association of Nigerian Nurses and Midwives (NANNM) and the Medical and Health Workers Union (MHWU), has disrupted both routine and specialized medical services.
Patients have reported long waiting times, cancellations of surgeries, and restricted access to outpatient care. Pregnant women, chronic patients, and emergency cases have been particularly affected. The unions insist that the government has failed to fulfill prior agreements on workers’ welfare, forcing them to resort to industrial action.
Government officials have described the strike as “unnecessary” and assured that negotiations will resume within the week. Meanwhile, health experts warn that prolonged disruption could escalate public health risks, especially in rural areas where medical facilities are already limited. Social media has seen widespread outcry, urging swift resolution.
This strike highlights ongoing systemic challenges in Nigeria’s healthcare sector, including inadequate funding, workforce management issues, and poor incentives for medical staff.
