After Another Grid Failure, NLC Demands Audit of Power Sector Infrastructure

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has called for a comprehensive audit of the nation’s power sector infrastructure following yet another collapse of the national grid that plunged parts of the country into darkness.

In a statement on Thursday, the NLC expressed concern that frequent grid failures are worsening the economic and social hardships faced by Nigerians, especially households and businesses already struggling with high fuel costs and inflation. The union said the situation highlights years of neglect, poor investment, and lack of accountability in the electricity sector despite billions of naira sunk into generation, transmission, and distribution.

The NLC urged the Federal Government to immediately commission an independent audit of all existing facilities across the power chain to determine their true state, identify loopholes, and recommend actionable reforms. According to the union, without transparency and accountability, Nigeria risks remaining trapped in perpetual darkness and wasted resources.

The Congress also demanded that culprits responsible for mismanagement of funds or negligence in the sector be held accountable, stressing that uninterrupted power supply is not a luxury but a necessity for industrial growth and national development.

This latest grid collapse adds to the long list of failures recorded this year, raising fresh questions about the reliability of Nigeria’s electricity infrastructure and the sincerity of reforms in the sector.
