Kanu Seeks Transfer from DSS Custody to National Hospital
Leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has appealed to the Federal High Court to order his transfer from the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) to the National Hospital, Abuja, for urgent medical care.
Kanuâs legal team raised concerns over his deteriorating health condition, arguing that the facilities at the DSS detention centre are inadequate to cater to his medical needs. His lawyers stressed that specialized treatment is required, which only a standard medical institution such as the National Hospital can provide.
The application also urged the court to ensure that Kanu is given unfettered access to his doctors and family members, insisting that his continued detention under restricted medical supervision violates his fundamental rights.
The Federal Government, however, is expected to respond to the application, with sources indicating that the DSS may oppose the transfer, citing security concerns.
The case is slated for further hearing in the coming weeks, with heightened attention from both supporters of the IPOB leader and human rights advocates who have consistently called for better treatment of detainees.
