Church Members Avoided Me Over Muslim-Muslim Ticket – Remi Tinubu
Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has revealed that she faced social isolation from fellow church members following her husband’s decision to run on a Muslim-Muslim ticket during the 2023 presidential election.
Speaking at a public forum in Abuja, Mrs. Tinubu recounted how some members of her congregation deliberately distanced themselves from her, refusing to associate with her due to the religious controversy surrounding the All Progressives Congress (APC) ticket.
She noted that the choice of a Muslim-Muslim ticket drew heavy criticism and skepticism, especially from Christian communities, but expressed gratitude that despite the initial backlash, the decision did not stop her husband, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, from emerging victorious.
“I remember how some members of the church avoided me because of the Muslim-Muslim ticket, but I held my head high, trusting that God’s will would prevail,” she said.
The First Lady stressed that her experience underscored the need for Nigerians to look beyond religious sentiments and focus on leadership that prioritizes development, unity, and peace.
Political analysts have observed that her remarks highlight the deep-rooted religious sensitivities in Nigeria’s political space, even as calls for inclusivity and tolerance continue to grow.
