Governor Fubara Dissolves Cabinet, others
Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has announced the immediate dissolution of his cabinet, affecting all commissioners and public officers appointed during his administration. The decision follows a Supreme Court ruling that declared the three-man factional House of Assembly, led by Victor Oko-Jumbo, unlawful. Consequently, all legislative actions, including the screening and confirmation of commissioners, were rendered invalid .
The Supreme Court's judgment, issued in February 2025, recognized the 27-member House of Assembly led by Speaker Martins Amaewhule as the authentic legislative body in the state. This ruling nullified all decisions made by the Oko-Jumbo faction, including the appointments of over 19 commissioners .
Governor Fubara addressed the matter during a valedictory session held at the Government House in Port Harcourt on Wednesday, coinciding with Nigeria's 65th Independence Anniversary. In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Nelson Chukwudi, the governor expressed gratitude to the affected officials for their service and contributions to the state's development over the past two years. He also emphasized the importance of national unity and called on all Nigerians to collaborate with President Bola Tinubu in building a peaceful, secure, and prosperous country .
This development marks a significant shift in the political landscape of Rivers State, following the lifting of a six-month emergency rule imposed earlier this year. The emergency rule was declared to address a political crisis between Governor Fubara and the state legislature, which had led to disruptions in governance and budget approvals .
With the dissolution of the cabinet, attention now turns to the formation of a new executive council and the restoration of legislative functions in the state. The governor's next steps will be closely watched as he navigates the post-crisis political environment.
