Terrorism: Retired Generals Back Calls for State of Emergency

A group of retired Nigerian military generals has expressed strong support for recent calls urging President Bola Tinubu to declare a state of emergency on terrorism and national security. The former service chiefs and senior officers said the current wave of insurgency, banditry, and kidnapping across the North and other parts of the country has reached a “national crisis point” that requires urgent and extraordinary intervention.

At a high-level security roundtable in Abuja, the generals—including ex-Army commanders and intelligence experts—warned that Nigeria’s territorial integrity and economic stability are at risk if the government continues with “piecemeal measures.” They called for massive troop deployment, improved funding for the armed forces, and collaboration with regional partners to eliminate terror cells.

They also urged the National Assembly to support emergency security reforms, including enhanced community policing, drone surveillance, and stricter border control. Civil society groups and traditional rulers were encouraged to mobilize local intelligence to support the military.

Meanwhile, the Defence Headquarters welcomed the renewed advocacy, stating that new counterterrorism strategies are already in motion under the Tinubu administration’s renewed security agenda.
