Customs engages stakeholders to tackle border crimes, trade barriers at Seme corridor
The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) has intensified efforts to curb trans-border crimes and enhance legitimate trade along the Seme-Krake border. At a stakeholdersâ engagement held at the Seme Command headquarters, the Customs Area Controller, Comptroller Timi Bomodi, emphasized the need for collaboration between security agencies, community leaders, and traders to combat smuggling, human trafficking, and illegal migration.
Bomodi reiterated that the Service is committed to promoting the governmentâs economic diversification agenda through seamless trade facilitation and security enforcement at the nationâs borders. He noted that joint patrols and intelligence sharing with Benin Republic counterparts have already led to significant seizures of contraband goods, including petroleum products and banned items.
Stakeholders at the meeting urged Customs to simplify clearance procedures, improve communication channels, and strengthen cooperation with local transport unions to reduce delays in cargo processing. They also called for sustained dialogue to address recurring challenges affecting cross-border business.
The Customs boss reaffirmed that the Command will continue implementing measures aligned with the World Customs Organizationâs (WCO) trade facilitation standards to boost regional integration and revenue generation.
