2027: Court asked to stop Jonathan from contesting
A coalition of civil society groups has filed a suit at the Federal High Court in Abuja seeking to bar former President Goodluck Jonathan from contesting in the 2027 presidential election. The group argues that Jonathan, having previously served more than one term, is constitutionally disqualified under Section 137(3) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), which prohibits anyone who has been sworn in twice as president from seeking re-election. The plaintiffs urged the court to issue an injunction preventing the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from accepting his nomination should he decide to run. Jonathanâs aides, however, dismissed the suit as politically motivated, insisting the former leader has not declared any ambition for 2027. Legal analysts say the case could set a major precedent for term-limit interpretation in Nigeria.
