Nigeria TV Info â United States Moves to Ban Chinese Airlines from Using Russian Airspace
Washington, D.C. â The United States government has announced plans to ban Chinese airlines from using Russian airspace for flights operating to and from America â a move that could significantly reshape transpacific aviation routes and heighten geopolitical tensions.
In a statement issued by the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT), Washington explained that the proposal aims to address a âcompetitive imbalanceâ created by current flight routes, which allow Chinese airlines to traverse Russian territory while American carriers are restricted due to sanctions related to Moscowâs invasion of Ukraine.
Since March 2022, Russian airspace has been closed to U.S. and many Western airlines after Washington imposed reciprocal flight bans on Russian carriers. However, Chinese state-owned airlines â including Air China, China Eastern, China Southern, and Xiamen Airlines â have continued flying through Russian airspace, benefiting from shorter routes, lower fuel consumption, and reduced flight times.
The USDOT described this as a âsignificant competitive factorâ undermining fair competition by giving Chinese airlines a cost and scheduling advantage over their U.S. counterparts. If approved, the ban would force Chinese airlines to adopt longer alternative routes similar to those currently used by American carriers.
The measure forms part of Washingtonâs broader effort to âlevel the playing fieldâ between U.S. and Chinese aviation industries while sustaining diplomatic and economic pressure on Moscow.
The Chinese Embassy in Washington declined to comment on the proposal, leaving uncertainty about Beijingâs possible reaction. Analysts warn that the move could further strain already tense U.S.âChina relations, adding new friction to disputes over trade, technology, and global influence.
