Ex-INEC Chair Mahmood Yakubu: Technology Improved Polls but Can’t End Electoral Flaws
Former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, has stated that while the use of technology has significantly enhanced the conduct of elections in Nigeria, it cannot completely eliminate electoral malpractices. Speaking at a democracy forum in Abuja on Friday, Yakubu explained that technology has strengthened transparency and improved voter confidence, but human factors remain a major challenge.
He cited issues such as vote-buying, political interference, and weak enforcement of electoral laws as obstacles that technology alone cannot fix. According to him, the introduction of the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) and the INEC Results Viewing Portal (IReV) has increased credibility but must be complemented by civic education and institutional reforms.
Yakubu urged political parties, security agencies, and citizens to uphold ethical standards, stressing that democracy can only thrive through collective integrity. He also called for continuous review of electoral laws to match technological advancements and global best practices.
