The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has officially declared the commencement of a two-week warning strike following the rejection of the Federal Government’s latest proposal regarding the union’s long-standing demands. The decision was reached after an emergency National Executive Council (NEC) meeting held in Abuja on Sunday night.
ASUU President, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke, announced that the strike takes immediate effect across all federal and state universities. He stated that the government failed to meet key agreements, including the renegotiation of the 2009 FG-ASUU agreement, payment of withheld salaries, and implementation of the University Transparency and Accountability Solution (UTAS).
Osodeke noted that the strike is aimed at compelling the government to fulfill its promises and address the deteriorating condition of tertiary institutions nationwide. He emphasized that the union remains open to dialogue but would not call off the strike until concrete actions are taken.
Students across various universities have expressed mixed reactions, with many lamenting the disruption of academic activities while others support ASUU’s move as a fight for better education.
The Federal Ministry of Education is yet to release an official statement as discussions between the two parties remain deadlocked.
