Maiduguri, Borno State — The Nigerian Army has announced that the security situation in the North-East region has improved significantly following sustained counter-terrorism operations and enhanced collaboration among security agencies.

The Theatre Commander, Joint Task Force, North-East Operation Hadin Kai, Major General Abdulsalam Abubakar, disclosed this on Saturday during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Maiduguri, Borno State.

In a related development, the Army also revealed that troops of 2 Division/Sector 3, Operation Fansan Yamma, rescued 21 kidnapped victims in Kwara State as part of ongoing efforts to eliminate bandits and other criminal elements across the region.

Major General Abubakar said the Armed Forces of Nigeria had maintained operational initiative across the North-East theatre, effectively denying terrorists freedom of movement and access to logistics that previously fueled their campaign of terror.

According to him, the lingering insecurity in the region is connected to broader regional and global dynamics, including instability in the Sahel, the Middle East, and the ongoing Russia–Ukraine conflict.

> “Since November last year, we have observed an increase in the use of armed drones and radio-controlled improvised explosive devices by the terrorists. These trends are direct consequences of global technological proliferation linked to conflicts elsewhere,” he explained.

Despite these challenges, Abubakar affirmed that the military continues to maintain the upper hand.

> “The goal of the Armed Forces remains to flush out terrorists from their remaining strongholds in Sambisa Forest, the Mandara Mountains, the Tumbuns, and the Lake Chad Islands,” he stated.

He added that coordinated operations have produced impressive results, including the neutralisation of 26 key terrorist commanders in the past two months and significant recoveries of arms, ammunition, and vehicles.

The Nigerian Army reiterated its commitment to restoring peace and stability across all troubled regions, assuring Nigerians that ongoing operations will continue until the full defeat of terrorism and banditry.
