Mathematics Remains Compulsory for O’Level Students, Says Federal Government

The Federal Government has reaffirmed that Mathematics will remain a compulsory subject for all students at the O’Level, emphasizing its vital role in national development and technological advancement. The Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, made the announcement during a stakeholders’ forum in Abuja, stating that the subject forms the foundation of scientific literacy and critical reasoning among students.

According to Mamman, the government has no intention of relaxing the requirement, as Mathematics competence is crucial for higher education, innovation, and global competitiveness. He added that the ministry is working to improve teaching quality, teacher motivation, and classroom resources to enhance students’ performance in Mathematics nationwide.

The minister also revealed plans to expand teacher training programs and integrate digital learning tools to make the subject more engaging and practical. Stakeholders at the event welcomed the decision, describing it as a step toward strengthening Nigeria’s educational foundation and workforce readiness.
