FreeNnamdiKanu: Protest Wave Hits Abuja, Paralyses South-East States

Massive protests demanding the release of detained IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu, erupted across major cities on Monday, paralyzing commercial and governmental activities in Nigeria’s South-East region. Demonstrators also stormed parts of Abuja, chanting pro-Kanu songs and displaying placards calling for justice and freedom.

In Enugu, Owerri, Aba, and Onitsha, markets, schools, and transport services were shut down as protesters took to the streets. Security agencies were deployed to strategic locations to prevent violence, while reports indicated minor clashes between protesters and police in parts of Imo and Ebonyi States.

In Abuja, hundreds of protesters converged near the Unity Fountain before security operatives dispersed them with tear gas. The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) reiterated that Kanu’s continued detention violates court orders, urging the federal government to comply with rulings for his release.

The protests caused heavy gridlock across several parts of the Federal Capital Territory and total lockdown in the South-East. Human rights groups have also joined the call for dialogue, warning that prolonged detention could escalate tensions further in the region.
