International Press Centre Condemns Assaults on Journalists Covering #FreeNnamdiKanuNow Protest in Abuja

The International Press Centre (IPC) has strongly condemned the reported assaults on journalists who were covering the #FreeNnamdiKanuNow protest in Abuja on Wednesday. According to eyewitnesses, several journalists were harassed, beaten, and had their equipment seized by security operatives during the protest demanding the release of the detained IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu.

IPC Executive Director, Lanre Arogundade, in a statement, described the attack as a gross violation of press freedom and a dangerous attempt to silence the media. He urged the Inspector General of Police and other relevant authorities to investigate the incident and bring the perpetrators to justice.

The press body emphasized that journalists have a constitutional right to cover public demonstrations without fear or intimidation, calling for stronger protection of media practitioners in Nigeria.

Civil rights groups and media unions have also joined the IPC in condemning the assault, demanding accountability and respect for democratic rights.
