Hurricane Tinubu: Taraba, Plateau, Adamawa Governors Face Defection Dilemma Amid APC Pressure

A new wave of political realignment appears to be sweeping through Nigeria’s North-East and North-Central regions as the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) intensifies efforts to lure opposition governors into its fold. Governors Agbu Kefas of Taraba, Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau, and Ahmadu Fintiri of Adamawa are reportedly under increasing pressure to defect from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) ahead of the 2027 general elections.

According to reliable sources within both parties, emissaries loyal to President Bola Tinubu have been holding discreet talks with the trio, promising “strategic advantages” and federal support in exchange for political cooperation. The move, insiders say, is part of what political observers now refer to as “Hurricane Tinubu” — a broad consolidation strategy aimed at weakening the PDP’s influence in key Northern states.

While Governor Fintiri is said to be resisting the move due to his strong grassroots base in Adamawa, sources claim Mutfwang’s administration in Plateau has come under subtle pressure following recent court battles involving party officials. In Taraba, Governor Kefas’s aides have denied any defection plans but acknowledged that overtures from the APC have intensified in recent weeks.

Analysts believe that the defection of any of the three governors could tilt the balance of power in the North ahead of the next polls. However, the PDP leadership insists that it remains united and is working to strengthen internal cohesion amid what it calls “political intimidation.”

Political watchers predict more alignments and defections as the Tinubu administration consolidates its hold across regions in preparation for a tougher 2027 contest.
