EFCC, NFIU Launch Crackdown on Alleged Coup Funders

Nigeria’s anti-graft agencies, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Nigerian Financial Intelligence Unit (NFIU), have reportedly commenced a coordinated operation to trace and apprehend individuals suspected of financing the recent alleged coup plot.

According to reliable security sources, the two agencies are analysing suspicious financial transactions linked to high-profile politicians, contractors, and business moguls believed to have channelled funds to elements within the military. The investigation, which began after the Defence Headquarters submitted intelligence reports to the Presidency, is said to have uncovered several accounts with large, unexplained inflows over the past three months.

Preliminary findings suggest that part of the suspected funds originated from public projects in the Niger Delta and were allegedly laundered through shell companies and offshore accounts before being repatriated for covert operations. Some senior officers and civilians have already been invited for questioning, while several bank accounts have been frozen pending further investigation.

The EFCC’s spokesperson declined to provide specific details, citing national security concerns, but confirmed that a “joint task force” is in place to ensure no suspect escapes scrutiny. The NFIU, on its part, has issued alerts to major banks and financial institutions to report any large or suspicious transfers involving politically exposed persons.

Security experts have lauded the move, describing it as a critical step towards dismantling the financial network of anti-democratic actors. However, they also warned against witch-hunting and urged the government to ensure due process in the ongoing crackdown.

The investigation is expected to intensify in the coming weeks as more names emerge from the expanding financial intelligence data.
