PDP Convenes Emergency Meeting After Court Halts National Convention

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) leadership has called an emergency meeting following a Federal High Court order temporarily halting its planned national convention scheduled for next week. The injunction, granted in Abuja on Friday, came after a faction within the party filed a motion challenging the legitimacy of the current National Working Committee (NWC) and the processes leading to the convention.

Sources close to the party’s headquarters disclosed that the National Executive Committee (NEC) and Board of Trustees (BoT) members were summoned to an urgent session to deliberate on the legal implications and possible appeal options. Party insiders say the ruling has deepened internal divisions, with some members accusing certain governors and stakeholders of orchestrating the crisis to influence leadership restructuring ahead of the 2027 elections.

Meanwhile, the party’s legal team has vowed to challenge the order, describing it as “a temporary setback” that would not derail the PDP’s democratic process. Observers warn that prolonged litigation could disrupt the opposition’s efforts to reorganise and position itself as a formidable challenger in the next general election.
