Trump’s Military Threat Against Nigeria Violates International Norms – Expert

A foreign policy expert, Dr. Tunde Alade, has condemned United States President Donald Trump’s recent military threat against Nigeria, describing it as a violation of international law and diplomatic conventions.

Dr. Alade, a lecturer in International Relations at the University of Lagos, said Trump’s statement — where he warned of possible U.S. military action if alleged killings of Christians in Nigeria continue — undermines the sovereignty of an independent nation.

He explained that under the United Nations Charter, no member state has the authority to threaten the use of force against another sovereign nation except under Security Council approval or in cases of self-defence.

According to him, “Such a threat from the U.S. President disregards Nigeria’s autonomy and could inflame diplomatic tensions. The proper approach should be dialogue and multilateral engagement, not threats.”

The expert further urged the Nigerian government to engage the U.S. through diplomatic channels to prevent escalation, while also addressing internal security concerns that could be misinterpreted internationally.

Meanwhile, civil society groups have urged the Federal Government to issue a strong diplomatic response, stressing that Trump’s remarks could set a dangerous precedent in global diplomacy.
