Former Israeli Military Chief Lawyer Arrested Over Leaked Detainee Abuse Video Scandal
Former Military Advocate General of the Israel Defence Forces (IDF), Maj. Gen. Yifat Tomer-Yerushalmi, has been arrested amid an escalating political and legal crisis surrounding a leaked video allegedly showing the severe abuse of a Palestinian detainee by Israeli reservist soldiers.
Tomer-Yerushalmi resigned last week, taking responsibility for the release and mishandling of the footage, which triggered public outrage and international scrutiny. Her arrest marks a significant escalation in the inquiry, which has now extended beyond the soldiers involved to senior figures within Israelâs military legal system.
The controversial video, first broadcast in August 2024, reportedly depicts reservists at Sde Teiman, a military base in southern Israel, beating a detainee and using a sharp object to inflict injuries while blocking camera visibility. The detainee was said to have sustained serious physical harm.
Five reservists have since been charged with aggravated assault and causing severe bodily injury, though they deny all allegations, insisting the footage was misinterpreted and taken out of context.
Israeli police say the investigation is now focused not only on the abuse itself, but also on how the video was leaked and whether senior officials attempted to interfere with or influence internal military investigations.
Human rights groups have called for full transparency and accountability, while some Israeli political figures argue that the arrests may be politically motivated amid rising tensions inside the government.
The case continues to draw global attention, particularly among international legal and human rights organizations, who see it as a major test of Israelâs military justice system, already facing intense scrutiny over the treatment of detainees in conflict zones.
