U.S. Works With Global Partners to End Sudan Conflict as RSF Captures Key Darfur Stronghold

The United States says it is working closely with international partners to end the war in Sudan, following rising concerns over reports of mass killings and humanitarian atrocities in the city of Al-Fashir.

According to a statement released by the White House on Tuesday, Washington is engaging with regional and global actors to push for an immediate halt to the fighting and protect civilians trapped in conflict zones.

This comes after the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), a powerful paramilitary group, seized control of Al-Fashir — the Sudanese army’s last major stronghold in the Darfur region. The takeover is seen by analysts as a pivotal moment in Sudan’s 19-month civil war, shifting the balance of power sharply in favor of the RSF.

With Al-Fashir now under its control, the RSF holds dominance over more than a quarter of Sudan’s territory — deepening fears of further ethnic violence and displacement in Darfur, a region already scarred by years of conflict and genocide.

Humanitarian workers and local residents have reported widespread killings, looting, and the burning of neighborhoods during the assault. Thousands of civilians have fled the city, while many others remain trapped without access to food, water, or medical services.

The White House condemned the attacks and called for the protection of civilians, warning that those responsible for atrocities will be held accountable. It also urged both the RSF and the Sudanese Armed Forces to return to peace negotiations.

Sudan has been locked in a brutal power struggle since April last year, when tensions between the army and the RSF erupted into full-scale war, leaving thousands dead and millions displaced.

As diplomatic efforts intensify, international observers have warned that without urgent intervention, Sudan risks sliding further into chaos, instability, and famine.
