US House of Representatives Seeks Sanctions on Miyetti Allah Groups Over Alleged Role in Religious Violence
The United States House of Representatives has called on the U.S. Department of State and the Department of the Treasury to place targeted sanctions on certain Nigerian groups, including the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria and Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore, over alleged involvement in religious-based violence across Nigeria.
This call for sanctions was contained in a resolution introduced before the U.S. House on Tuesday and published on the official U.S. Congress website on Wednesday.
According to the resolution, the groups were listed among entities accused of contributing to attacks and conflicts in various communities, particularly in regions where clashes between farmers and herders have led to loss of lives, displacement, and destruction of property.
The lawmakers urged the U.S. government to increase diplomatic engagement with Nigeria and ensure accountability for individuals and organizations linked to violence, regardless of ethnic or religious affiliations.
The resolution also highlighted concerns about the growing insecurity in parts of Nigeria, calling on authorities to intensify efforts to protect vulnerable communities, promote religious freedom, and prosecute those behind sectarian attacks.
However, as of the time of this report, there has been no official response from the Miyetti Allah associations mentioned in the resolution.
