Senate Clears Air Peace of Negligence, Faults NSIB Over “Inconsistent” Runway Incident Report

The Nigerian Senate has cleared West and Central Africa’s largest airline, Air Peace, of allegations of pilot negligence and drug use linked to a July 13 runway excursion incident at the Port Harcourt International Airport.

Following a review of preliminary findings from the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB), the Senate Committee on Aviation said the investigation report contained “serious inconsistencies and uncoordinated conclusions”, which could harm Nigeria’s global aviation reputation.

Committee Chairman Senator Abdulfatai Buhari noted that although the aircraft veered off the runway, no life was lost and the plane was safely recovered. He expressed concern that the NSIB’s shifting narrative—from broad claims of drug use among crew members to later identifying only two individuals—was damaging and misleading, especially in the eyes of international aviation regulators.
