North Korea Fires Suspected Ballistic Missile Amid Rising Tensions With US, South Korea
North Korea on Friday launched a suspected short-range ballistic missile toward its eastern waters, South Koreaâs military has confirmed, in what appears to be the latest escalation in Pyongyangâs ongoing series of weapons tests.
According to a statement from South Koreaâs Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS), the missile was fired from an inland area near Taekwan County. It traveled an estimated 700 kilometers (about 434 miles) before landing in the sea. South Korean and United States intelligence officials, who had reportedly tracked indications of the launch beforehand, say detailed analysis is still underway.
In response to the launch, South Korea elevated its surveillance posture and is coordinating closely with the United States and Japan to monitor further developments. Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi also confirmed the incident, noting that the missile fell outside Japanâs Exclusive Economic Zone and caused no damage or injuries.
The latest launch comes amid a sharp uptick in North Koreaâs military activity in recent weeks, including what it claims were successful tests of hypersonic and cruise missile systems. Earlier this week, South Korean defense officials reported that North Korea fired 10 rounds of artillery into its western waters, coinciding with a visit to Seoul by US Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth.
Observers say the increased frequency of missile tests highlights intensifying tensions on the Korean Peninsula, as Pyongyang continues to push back against expanded joint military exercises among the United States, South Korea, and Japan.
Security analysts warn that the situation may escalate further, with diplomatic engagement between Pyongyang and Washington remaining dormant for years.
